Slow But Steady Progress

I have decided doing the chain stitch is what hurts most. So I have been doing little of it.

But by popping the embroidery back in the hoop I have been able to make a thatched roof for the cottage and some new flowers off to the left.

CESP 13

Where has August gone?
So little progress to share.

But I am very happy with the spider web.

CESP 12

I chose to scan my embroidery this morning. Not sure if it is better or worse, just different. The far left end of the embroidery is moving right along. And I have this wonderful space to the right of the birdhouse that is just waiting for a new character.

The pink and purple flower.

Can you spot the mushrooms?

Drooping flowers.

The owl.

The squirrel, reading before bed.

CESP 11

I've added another 'birdhouse' to the left end of my crewel embroidery. I love the house, but I wanted to make sure it read as being behind the leaves not in the same plane.
That is not a problem, in fact adding more leaves and texture is the fun part of this work.

This view might make the 3D aspect more apparent.

Another over all view with the left edge finally defined.

Crewel Embroidery Stitching Progress 10 (CESP from now on)

We've been traveling, Yellowstone National Park. I like its original name best, "Wonderland". It is extraordinary! Of course one of the best parts of going away is coming home again.

Here was the crewel embroidery when I left. All I took with me was background wool. It was easy to pick up and work at odd free moments. There weren't that many.

Lots of background on the left hand side of the embroidery got filled in.

And I added one new flower today!

Crewel Embroidery Progress 9

I keep thinking I'll add just a couple more stitches before I take a current photo. Then just a couple more.....
I love this dandy bird striding over the flowers.

And a new white flower shining in the moon light.

Crewel Embroidery Progress 8

A new bird has been stitched.
And next to him a butterfly.

The fruit bearing tree has new beads blooming.

Here is the over-all design.

Crewel Embroidery Progress 7

The bunny is taking some flowers home to put on the dinner table.

This is such a delight to stitch. Once I stitch a section of the background I enjoy adding leaves, flowers, branches....

Crewel Embroidery Progress 6

I'm very happy with my new background, both the color and the different stitch.
The bunny now has a smart red vest with blue buttons. Under the glow worm is the beginning of the flower bed. Lots of 3-D stitches and flowers.

With coat tails flying this young bird is headed home for the night.

Constant tweaks and changes.

Crewel Embroidery Progress 5

I wasn't happy with the background. I didn't like the way I was stitching it and I didn't like the colors. Now was a good time to change this. There is quite a bit of background sky in this embroidery.

So I dyed a new batch of background sky. It looks like wooly wisteria as it drys in the backyard. I dyed the wool in two separate pots hoping for a slight color variation between the two. It might be there but I'm not seeing it yet. Now if I wanted identical colors....!

I'm doing some of the grass hills in chain stitch. I love the texture. I'm stitching directly over some small details. I'll stitch the details and figures on top of the chain stitches when I'm ready.

Crewel Embroidery Stitching Progress 4

I am playing with stitches.

As usual my work doesn't fall under the traditional category, but then it doesn't stray that far from the norm either.

One of my favorite looks from my rug hooking days is a background that is mottled or varied.

That is one of the things I am aiming for with this piece.

Crewel Embroidery Stitching Progress 3

The stitching continues and so do the changes.
A pool, waterfall, swan and fish have all magically appeared out of nowhere.

Crewel Embroidery Stitching Progress 2

The bunny was not in the original drawing. I'm never good at following directions, even when I'm the one writing them.

Crewel Embroidery Stitching Progress 1

Here is the drawing.

And here is the first progress report. Working with the wool thread is so different than embroidery floss. I'm having fun learning the nuances of the wool and playing with new stitches and stitch combinations.
